From Victorian laundry to artists studios

Built on the site of a derelict Victorian Soft Water Laundry, Robertson Yard Studios has been home to arts and crafts practitioners and seen a number of transformations since its acquisition in 1997. A major refurbishment took place in 2018 to create the space seen above…but it wasn’t always thus! Labour and sub-contractors were supplied by Southern Living (www.southernliving.co.uk ).

We gratefully acknowledge their input and advice on structural and construction matters as well as creative solutions to the various opportunities that arose as the building program developed.

Following clearance of the site and the unforeseen removal of 220 tons of spoil due to ground conditions (and the subsequent benefit of an underground basement), structural steelwork was fabricated on site and erected.

Robertson Yard Arts and Crafts workshops in Brighton; an 18 month rebuild and once again, home to 15 very different practitioners, from glass blowing and electronic instruments, to comic book workshops and violin making


Situated at the southern end of the site the Main building was completed in 2019; at the northern end is the ‘Tree House’ (built c.2005) with three individual studios:

This workshop alone required 15 piles driven up to 6m deep:
